994) THE STAR 15/11/13- Groups: Take swift action to reduce water loss
26 Nov 2013

PETALING JAYA:
Consumer associations are calling for swift action to be taken to reduce
non-revenue water, besides educating the public about it.
Malaysian Muslim
Consumer Association (PPIM) chief activist Datuk Nadzim Johan said water
operators need to monitor the amount lost, especially through theft.
“If this situation
persists, it is only a matter of time before the losses are transferred to
consumers.”
“We are very
concerned about this,” he said.
About 15% to 20% of
the 1.994 trillion litres lost last year was attributed to theft and inaccurate
water meters.
Fomca deputy
secretary general Foon Weng Lian believed one of the possible solutions lies in
a nationwide outreach campaign.
“Then we can ensure
that people are clear about how they can contribute in addressing the pro-blem.
“We also want the
Government to set up a policy on non-revenue water, along with a timeline on
repair works,” he said.

At present, he said
there was only a taskforce which could merely advise on solutions, which were
sometimes ignored due to financial constraints.
