PLATFORM NEEDED FOR FEEDBACK ON SST – NEW STRAIT TIMES – 3/9/18
05 Sep 2018

NST ( SST ) 3.9.18

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association (PPIM) today urged the government to provide a platform for the people to give their feedback before reviewing the list of goods under the sales and services tax (SST).

Its lead activist Datuk Nadzim Johan said the government has to determine goods that are classified as essential items to ensure protection of people in the lower income group or B40 category.

“This is to ensure that they are not confused or dissatisfied,” he said.

Yesterday, Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng announced that the government would review the list of goods under the SST and amend it by the end of the year.

The minister said the government would also factor in the views of the people.

Nadzim’s view echoed that of Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca) deputy president Mohd Yusof Abdul Rahman, who said that although SST was already in effect, the government has to take into account the people’s complaints on the reintroduced tax.

Two days ago, Yusof said that the Pakatan Harapan government need to realise that people rejected the earlier government because they felt burdened by the rising prices of goods that put them, especially those living in the city, under pressure to keep their lives afloat.
